The UAE is moving past the peak of its traditional summer heat, but residents should not expect cooler weather immediately. While the appearance of the Suhail star is traditionally seen as a sign that summer is beginning to ease, temperatures will remain high for weeks.
Suhail, also known internationally as Canopus, is expected to appear on August 24. According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, its arrival signals a gradual transition rather than a sudden change in weather.
Residents may notice temperatures slowly moderating, but high humidity could continue to make conditions feel extremely hot.
UAE has passed peak summer heat
The UAE has recently moved beyond Ayam Al Ghayth, the traditional period associated with the most intense summer heat. It generally runs for about six weeks, from early July to around August 10.
During this period, temperatures have reached extreme levels. On August 5, readings crossed 51°C, while nighttime temperatures climbed as high as 35°C.
Although temperatures are expected to gradually decline, the summer heat is far from over.
Humidity could make the weather feel hotter
One of the biggest changes residents can expect is rising humidity.
As temperatures ease, moisture levels are likely to increase, particularly during September and October. This can make the weather feel considerably more uncomfortable even when actual temperatures are lower.
Higher humidity could also lead to more early-morning fog and dew. The first signs may appear toward the end of August, becoming more common during September.
Short bursts of extreme heat may continue
The arrival of Suhail does not mean the end of hot weather.
Traditional seasonal observations refer to Zafarat Al Qayth, a period when brief spells of intense heat can return even after the main summer peak has passed.
These temporary increases do not change the broader seasonal trend. More consistent moderation is expected as the country approaches the autumn equinox on September 23.
When will UAE weather become noticeably cooler?
Evenings are expected to become increasingly pleasant after the autumn equinox, although daytime temperatures will take longer to fall.
More noticeable daytime moderation is expected in November, with the broader transition toward cooler conditions continuing into December.
For now, residents should expect a mix of slightly lower temperatures, high humidity, occasional fog and possible short-lived heat spells.
What does the Suhail star mean?
Suhail does not cause the change in UAE weather. Instead, its appearance has traditionally been used as a seasonal marker in the Arabian calendar.
For generations, the star’s appearance has helped signal the gradual transition away from the harshest period of summer.
Other constellations, including Virgo, Libra and Scorpio, have similarly been used in traditional seasonal calendars to mark the progression through September, October and November.

The arrival of Suhail on August 24 will mark an important seasonal milestone, but residents will need to remain patient for genuinely cooler conditions.
