Dubai Gold Prices Slide Again as 24K Loses Dh39 in Nine Days

Dubai gold prices extended their decline on Wednesday, with the benchmark 24K rate falling to Dh519.25 per gram as higher US Treasury yields and renewed geopolitical uncertainty weighed on the precious metal.

According to Dubai Jewellery Group data, the UAE’s 24K gold price dropped from Dh522 per gram at Tuesday’s market close to Dh519.25 on Wednesday morning. The latest move means gold has shed almost Dh39 per gram over the past nine days.

The decline came as international gold prices also weakened. Spot gold was trading at about $4,304 an ounce in early Wednesday trading, down roughly 1 per cent and below the $4,400 level.

UAE gold prices fall across all major categories

The decline was not limited to 24K gold. Prices for other commonly traded categories also moved lower on Wednesday.

  • 24K: Dh519.25 per gram
  • 22K: Dh480.75 per gram
  • 21K: Dh461 per gram
  • 18K: Dh395 per gram
  • 14K: Dh308.25 per gram

The latest drop comes after a period of strong gains in the international gold market, with investors now reassessing the outlook for US interest rates and inflation.

Why gold prices are under pressure

Market analysts point to elevated US Treasury yields as one of the main factors weighing on gold.

Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, said higher yields have once again created pressure on gold because they increase the opportunity cost of holding an asset that does not generate interest.

The renewed strength in yields has made it harder for gold to maintain the pace of its earlier recovery.

Market expectations for US monetary policy have also become less supportive of the precious metal. Following comments made by Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole meeting, traders shifted towards a more cautious view of the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path.

Warsh highlighted continuing inflation risks and suggested that monetary conditions may not yet be sufficiently restrictive.

According to CME FedWatch figures cited in the report, the probability of the Federal Reserve raising rates by more than half a percentage point stood at close to 47 per cent.

Middle East tensions add to market uncertainty

Geopolitical developments are another factor affecting investor sentiment.

Renewed clashes in the Middle East have added uncertainty to financial markets, while reports of US military action involving rocket launchers on Larak Island have further complicated the regional outlook.

Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset during periods of geopolitical stress. However, the latest market movement shows that this support has been outweighed by pressure from higher yields and changing expectations around US monetary policy.

For UAE buyers, the combination of international market movements and local retail pricing means gold rates can change quickly during periods of heightened volatility.

What the latest drop means for Dubai gold buyers

The fall in Dubai gold prices could attract shoppers who have been waiting for a more favourable entry point, particularly those buying jewellery for upcoming weddings and festivals.

However, consumers should keep in mind that retail jewellery prices include more than the underlying gold rate. Making charges, retailer margins and applicable taxes can affect the final amount paid at the counter.

For investors, the latest decline also highlights how sensitive gold remains to US interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, the dollar and geopolitical developments.

Gold market outlook remains closely watched

The next direction for gold will depend heavily on how markets interpret incoming US economic data and signals from the Federal Reserve.

If Treasury yields remain elevated, gold could continue facing resistance. On the other hand, any shift towards easier monetary policy or a renewed escalation in geopolitical tensions could provide fresh support for the precious metal.

For now, Dubai’s gold market remains under pressure, with the 24K rate falling below Dh520 per gram and the metal recording a loss of nearly Dh39 per gram in just nine days.
