Dubai Police Warn UAE Residents About Common Online Scams

scam

Dubai Police have issued a fresh warning about the growing threat of online fraud, highlighting how scammers are using fake advertisements, cloned websites and increasingly sophisticated technology to target residents across the UAE.

From online shoppers to people searching for digital services, fraudsters are finding new ways to make fake offers and websites appear genuine. Police say even a small difference in a website address can be enough to deceive users.

Fake websites and social media ads

Hamad Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director of the Anti-Fraud Center at Dubai Police, said fraudulent social media advertisements and imitation websites are among the common methods used by scammers.

Fraudsters can replicate legitimate websites so closely that users may struggle to spot the difference. A changed letter in a web address, a different domain or a minor alteration in the site’s appearance could indicate that a platform is not genuine.

Police are urging residents to verify the identity of a business or individual before completing any transaction. Users should also check beneficiary details carefully before transferring money.

Think before clicking a link

Residents are being advised not to trust links simply because they arrive through a message, social media advertisement or other familiar-looking source.

Extra caution is needed when a link directs users to a payment page or requests banking information, passwords or other personal details.

Before taking any action, residents should check where the link leads and confirm that the organization behind it is legitimate.

Artificial intelligence is making scams harder to spot

Technology is also giving fraudsters new tools to make their schemes more convincing.

Artificial intelligence can help create realistic messages, images and other communications, while fake phone calls can make scammers appear to be representatives of legitimate organizations.

Dubai Police warned that these developments could make it increasingly difficult for people with limited digital experience to distinguish genuine communications from fraudulent ones.

The growing sophistication of scams makes digital awareness and careful verification more important than ever.

What to do if you become a victim

Police have urged victims to act immediately rather than waiting several days before reporting fraud.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted should secure or close the affected account and report the incident through the Dubai Police e-Crime platform, SPS service or at a police station.

Quick reporting can give authorities a better opportunity to respond and potentially limit further losses.

Public reporting can help stop scams

Dubai Police are continuing efforts to block fraudulent websites and fake social media accounts while raising public awareness about digital fraud.

Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious websites and fake accounts they encounter online.

Police stressed that a professional-looking website or convincing social media profile does not necessarily mean it is legitimate. Checking beneficiary information and verifying the source before transferring money or sharing sensitive information can prevent costly mistakes.

Stay alert in an increasingly digital UAE

Online scams are becoming more sophisticated, but basic precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Residents should avoid rushing into online payments, verify websites independently and never share sensitive banking or personal information with unverified sources.

As scammers increasingly use artificial intelligence and digital platforms, staying alert and taking a few extra seconds to verify information could make the difference between a safe transaction and a costly fraud.
