UAE Back-to-School Costs: What Parents Should Budget For

With schools across the UAE set to reopen on August 31, families are preparing for more than just new uniforms, books and school bags. For many parents, the start of the academic year also means managing a long list of expenses that can quickly stretch the household budget.

Tuition remains the largest education cost for most families, but additional spending on uniforms, stationery, transport, technology, meals, extracurricular activities and school trips can add thousands of dirhams over the course of a year.

For families with several children, these costs can multiply quickly.

Back-to-school spending goes beyond tuition

Parents often focus on school fees when planning for the academic year, but the actual cost of education can be considerably higher.

One UAE parent with four daughters estimates that her family spends around Dh8,000 to Dh10,000 on non-tuition expenses, including uniforms, books and transportation.

Payment schedules can also vary. While some families pay school fees monthly, others may need to manage quarterly payments, creating additional pressure on household cash flow.

Financial planning experts recommend calculating the total annual cost rather than looking only at the advertised tuition fee.

Uniforms, shoes and school supplies

Uniforms are among the first expenses parents encounter before the new school year.

One Dubai parent spent about Dh456 on a school uniform, PE kit and related items, followed by another Dh200 for school shoes and Dh50 for socks.

For families with two or more children, uniform expenses can become significant, particularly when schools change designs or students move into new year groups.

Parents can reduce costs by checking what still fits, reusing good-condition uniforms and purchasing only the items required for the coming term.

Second-hand uniform programmes offered by some schools can also provide a more affordable alternative.

Technology can be a major expense

Digital devices have become another important part of school budgets.

For some students, tablets or laptops are required for classroom learning. Replacing a device can cost several thousand dirhams, making technology one of the biggest unexpected back-to-school expenses.

Parents should first check whether an existing device can continue to meet the school’s requirements before purchasing a new one.

Some schools are also reviewing technology requirements to ensure that devices can be used for several years rather than replaced frequently.

Transport adds another recurring cost

School transportation is another expense families need to include in their annual calculations.

Depending on the school, route and service requirements, monthly transport fees can add hundreds of dirhams to the household budget.

Although monthly payment options can make the expense easier to manage, parents should calculate the full yearly amount when planning their education budget.

Activities and school trips can increase the bill

The school fee is not always the final bill.

Extracurricular activities, enrichment programmes, school trips, photographs, special events and project materials can create additional expenses during the academic year.

Older students may also face examination fees, specialist learning materials, university preparation programmes and graduation-related costs.

Some of these expenses are optional, while others may be compulsory, so parents should check the school’s fee structure carefully.

Small expenses can add up

Financial advisers warn that some of the most easily overlooked costs are relatively small individually.

A new backpack, stationery, activity-day contribution, school photograph, costume or project requirement may not seem significant on its own. However, several such expenses throughout the year can add up to a sizeable amount.

Parents can avoid surprises by reviewing spending from the previous academic year and using it as a realistic starting point for the new budget.

How UAE parents can reduce back-to-school costs

Families can take several practical steps to keep education spending under control:

  • Check existing uniforms, shoes and school supplies before shopping.
  • Buy only items listed as necessary by the school.
  • Compare prices before purchasing technology and other expensive items.
  • Consider second-hand uniforms where available.
  • Check whether siblings can reuse suitable equipment or supplies.
  • Separate compulsory expenses from optional activities.
  • Include transport and meals in the annual budget.
  • Keep a monthly reserve for unexpected school-related expenses.
  • Review the school’s payment schedule before the academic year begins.

Plan for the entire academic year

Financial education experts recommend treating education as an annual household expense rather than focusing only on monthly or termly payments.

Parents can estimate tuition, transport, uniforms, technology, activities and other expected costs, then divide the total into monthly savings targets.

For example, a family expecting Dh12,000 in additional education expenses over a year could set aside Dh1,000 each month.

This approach can make large annual expenses easier to manage and reduce the risk of last-minute financial pressure.

Look beyond this year’s school bill

For families with multiple children, planning several years ahead can be just as important as preparing for the immediate school reopening.

Expenses can rise as children move into secondary school, begin examination programmes or require specialist technology and learning materials.

Parents should therefore consider not only whether they can afford the upcoming school year, but also how education costs may change over the next three to five years.

The goal is not necessarily to avoid every additional expense. Instead, families can prioritise essential education costs while making informed decisions about optional activities, new devices and other purchases.

With schools reopening soon, a clear annual budget can help UAE families start the new academic year with fewer financial surprises.
