Tom Holland Says Zendaya Played a Key Role in His Decision to Join Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

Dubai: Tom Holland has shared how a light-hearted conversation with Zendaya became an unexpected factor in one of the biggest career decisions of his life.

The actor revealed that he almost had to choose between starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and returning as Spider-Man because both productions were originally scheduled to begin at the same time.

Speaking in an interview with People, Holland said he returned home after meeting Nolan and told Zendaya that he had received what he described as a career-defining offer.

Without mentioning the director’s name, Holland simply referred to it as “the big one.” Zendaya immediately guessed he was talking about Christopher Nolan.

According to Holland, Zendaya jokingly told him she would “leave” him if he turned down the opportunity. The remark drew laughter during the interview, with Nolan responding in good humour by thanking her.

Although the comment was made in jest, Holland admitted the scheduling conflict was real.

At the time, production on Spider-Man: Brand New Day was expected to begin on the same date as Nolan’s historical epic, leaving the actor uncertain about how both projects could move forward.

The situation was eventually resolved after Sony Pictures adjusted the filming schedule for the next Spider-Man installment, allowing Holland to remain attached to both productions.

In an earlier interview with GQ, Holland said he personally approached Sony executive Tom Rothman to request a delay in filming. He described the conversation as uncomfortable but necessary, adding that Nolan’s reputation for completing projects on time helped strengthen his case.

The revised schedule also allowed Holland and Zendaya to appear together in The Odyssey. Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, while Zendaya takes on the role of Athena in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s classic.

Nolan praised Holland during the same interview, describing him as an actor with remarkable dedication despite juggling multiple high-profile commitments. The director said he had wanted to work with Holland for years and appreciated the effort required to make both productions possible.

Away from the film set, Holland also appeared to confirm recent speculation surrounding his personal life. In a separate interview with Esquire, he acknowledged that he and Zendaya are married, while recalling how AI-generated wedding images circulating online briefly convinced members of his own family that a private ceremony had taken place without them.

The Odyssey is set to arrive in cinemas this week, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day scheduled to follow later this month, giving audiences the chance to see Holland headline two of the year’s most anticipated releases.
