UAE Authorities Take Action Against Two Individuals Over Offensive Social Media Live Broadcast

law UAE

The UAE’s National Media Authority (NMA) has initiated legal proceedings against two individuals for publishing content during a live social media broadcast that was found to violate the country’s media regulations and societal standards.

According to the authority, the broadcast included material considered offensive to the UAE’s cultural values, national identity, and civilizational heritage. Officials stated that the content also conflicted with widely accepted social norms and values within the Emirates.

In addition to the legal action, the NMA suspended the publicity permit of one of the individuals for a period of three months.

Authorities Warn Against Misuse of Digital Platforms

The National Media Authority emphasized that it will continue to take firm action against the misuse of digital platforms to gain views, followers, or engagement by publishing content that undermines the country’s values or creates unnecessary public controversy.

The authority reiterated that content creators and social media users are expected to comply with UAE laws and uphold the nation’s cultural and social principles while publishing online.

Legal Consequences for Violations

Legal experts have repeatedly advised residents that online posts, comments, or live broadcasts can result in criminal investigations if they violate the UAE’s legal framework.

Depending on the nature of the offense, penalties under UAE law may include:

  • Significant financial fines, which can reach up to AED 500,000
  • Imprisonment
  • Deportation for expatriate residents

Key Guidelines for Social Media Users in the UAE

Individuals creating or sharing online content in the UAE are expected to follow several important principles, including:

  • Respect religious beliefs and practices.
  • Preserve the country’s cultural heritage.
  • Protect national unity.
  • Show respect for the UAE’s governing system.
  • Avoid content that could affect the country’s foreign relations.
  • Refrain from spreading rumors or false information.
  • Respect the privacy of others.
  • Comply with legal and security regulations.
  • Follow official directives issued by authorities.
  • Operate within the country’s legal framework.

Laws Governing Media and Online Content

The UAE regulates digital and media content through two primary pieces of legislation:

Media Regulation Law

This law governs media activities across the UAE, outlining the responsibilities and rights of individuals and organizations involved in media production and distribution. It supports responsible media practices while ensuring published content aligns with the country’s laws and societal values.

Combating Rumors and Cybercrimes Law

The UAE’s cybercrime legislation criminalizes the spread of false information, online defamation, and electronic offenses against individuals or the state. The law is designed to protect national security, public stability, individual privacy, and the country’s reputation.

Conclusion

The latest enforcement action highlights the UAE’s continued focus on maintaining responsible digital communication and ensuring that online content aligns with the country’s legal, cultural, and ethical standards. Authorities have reminded residents and content creators that social media activity is subject to the same legal responsibilities as traditional forms of media.
