A Dubai car showroom where a deadly gas cylinder explosion claimed the life of an Indian expatriate earlier this week has remained closed as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
The Car Superstore, located in Al Quoz, has been shut for four consecutive days following Monday evening’s explosion, which killed a 27-year-old employee and injured five others. Company representatives confirmed the showroom will remain closed until further notice.
Investigation Underway
Dubai Civil Defence responded quickly to the emergency, bringing the resulting fire under control within an hour and securing the site.
The blast caused extensive damage to the showroom and also affected neighbouring businesses, with several nearby shop signboards damaged by the force of the explosion. When reporters visited the area the following day, soot-covered walls and the lingering smell of smoke highlighted the severity of the incident.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the gas cylinder explosion.
According to witnesses, officials have interviewed employees and others who were present at the time of the blast as part of the ongoing investigation.
Victim Identified
The victim has been identified as SP, a 27-year-old Indian expatriate from Kerala who moved to Dubai around eight months ago to work as a multimedia marketing specialist and videographer at the showroom.
He had married last year, and his sudden death has left his family in India devastated.
The Consulate General of India in Dubai has confirmed it is coordinating with local authorities and the victim’s family to complete the necessary formalities for repatriating his mortal remains to India.
Eyewitness Account
A colleague who was near the victim during the incident said employees and bystanders had noticed flames near a gate adjacent to nearby auto service workshops before the explosion occurred.
The eyewitness said he was only a few metres behind the victim while leaving the showroom when the gas cylinder exploded. Several staff members who had attempted to extinguish the initial fire were among those injured in the blast.
Renewed Focus on Gas Cylinder Safety
The fatal accident has once again highlighted the importance of proper gas cylinder handling, particularly during the UAE’s intense summer temperatures.
Dubai Police have repeatedly warned residents and businesses against purchasing or using gas cylinders supplied by unlicensed vendors. Earlier this year, authorities announced they had confiscated approximately 300 gas cylinders that failed to meet required safety standards.
Officials continue to urge businesses and residents to follow approved safety procedures and use only licensed gas cylinder suppliers to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
As investigations continue, authorities have not yet announced the official cause of the explosion.
