New York: Air quality has become an unexpected talking point ahead of the FIFA World Cup final after wildfire smoke drifting across North America prompted fresh concerns for players, fans and organisers.
With Argentina and Spain set to meet in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, weather experts are closely tracking smoke moving south from large wildfires burning across Canada.
The issue also drew a political response from US President Donald Trump, who criticised Canada over the deteriorating air quality.
In a post on social media, Trump said polluted air crossing the border was affecting parts of the northeastern United States and suggested Canada should be held responsible. He also raised the possibility of trade measures linked to the ongoing wildfire situation.
Air Quality Under Watch
Meteorologists currently expect air quality to remain within the “moderate” range by kick-off, but forecasts remain uncertain because changing weather patterns could alter smoke levels over the weekend.
Rain expected on Saturday may temporarily improve conditions, although experts say fresh smoke could return depending on wind direction and wildfire activity.

Spain midfielder Mikel Merino acknowledged that the haze had been noticeable during preparations but said the squad was concentrating on football rather than environmental conditions.
