At least 16 Bangladeshi nationals were killed after a fire broke out at a sofa manufacturing factory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, August 9, according to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The victims died in the blaze at a factory in the Musa Sanaia area of Riyadh. Authorities are now working to identify those who lost their lives and complete the required legal procedures before their remains are returned to Bangladesh.
Embassy assists victims’ families
Following the incident, officials from the Bangladesh mission visited the site and began coordinating with Saudi authorities to gather information about the victims.
The embassy said it is in contact with the families of those affected and is assisting with the identification process and other formalities.
Officials are also working with the relevant Saudi authorities to complete the procedures required for repatriation.
Once the legal formalities are completed, the victims’ bodies will be transported to Bangladesh with the consent of their respective families.
Bangladesh government expresses condolences
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and conveyed sympathy following the tragedy.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring developments and continuing to provide assistance to the affected families.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by migrant workers living and working abroad, particularly in industrial and manufacturing environments.
Previous tragedies involving South Asian nationals
Saudi Arabia has witnessed other fatal incidents involving South Asian nationals in recent years.
In November 2025, 45 Indian pilgrims were killed in a bus crash while travelling from Makkah to Madinah. Their bus collided with an oil tanker near Madinah, triggering a fire that engulfed the vehicle.
Authorities are continuing to deal with the aftermath of the latest Riyadh factory fire, while efforts remain focused on identifying the victims and returning their remains to their families.
